BUMP IT! or DUMP IT!, VOL. 96

[Strong Bump] = Unquestionable Smash Hit.  Extremely rewind-worthy and one of the better records out currently. Next to no flaws to pick out, that you'll be supporting/playing daily.  Something you predict will be a Top-15 Hit or higher.

[Weak Bump] = A Good Moderate Hit. Quality & above average; has more positives than negatives.  Might need to grow on you/others, but could catch on.  Not a clear smash hit, but something you'd genuinely want people to check out, so you’ll be supporting/playing it occasionally. Something you predict will be a Top-50 hit.

[Weak Dump] = Sup-Par Record. Not bad, but definitely missing the mark somewhere.  More negatives than positives.  Listenable, as you might like some parts but not the whole composition.  You don’t hate it, and could understand its buzz, but you know you won’t be supporting/playing it much.  Something you predict that won’t be on airwaves very long or have much replay-value.

[Strong Dump] = Complete Trash.  A record you absolutely hate, and has next to no positives at all.  Garbage, and a waste of your time; that you’d want to warn people away from.  Something that you’re sure you’ll never be supporting/playing ever; and predict that it’ll fail commercially.

Green = Rising
Red = Declining

BUMP IT! or DUMP IT!, VOL. 96:

 Simple rules:
Here’s the Top-9 new singles officially sent to Urban-based radio formats, that are either beginning to chart right now or expected to chart soon. In exchange, you can have & listen to them, and personally comment below, stating if you would *Bump It* or *Dump It* for each record and why... [Strong Bump, Weak Bump, Weak Dump, or Strong Dump]

-----------------------------

"BARBIE DREAMS" (Nicki Minaj),
Debuting @ #24 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
Debuting @ #33 on Urban formats;
via Young Money/Cash Money/Republic.,
[beginning w/ 1,015 + 1,093 Daily US Spins].  - It instantly brings back memories of the Original by BIG and the version by Lil Kim. I'm also positive this version and Kim's version will be compared to each other and debated. I like this version it's just not as impressive the third time around. I feel if you're going to remake something classic and something people are emotionally invested in you have to absolutely, undeniably kill it. I don't think she killed, this version is not as shocking or witty as the aforementioned versions. I also don't think this is a radio single, it would have been a better mixtape, leaked or lead up single before the album dropped; but not a single for radio. With that said, it'll still get some radio play because it's Nicki but I expect it to at most reach 25-30 range. - Weak Bump

"CALYPSO" (Luis Fonsi f/ Stefflon Don),
Debuting @ #12 on Spanish/Latin Urban formats;
Debuting @ #31 on Tropical/Island formats;
Shipped to Rhythmic/Club + Urban on 8/6/18;
via Universal-Latin.,
[beginning w/ 887 + 178 Daily US Spins] - The production is full of energy, it's an instant party. This is great for the club, it's a great regional record; it'll do really well in Miami / South Beach, on a cruise, in the islands. It's going to have a few problems in its current form; it's a seasonal sounding record, very summer-like, but we're deep into the summer and heading into fall. It's going to be tough to get this on urban formats with the majority of the lyrics not bein in english. But a remix of this with like Fat Joe would be huge for it. In its current form I don't think it'll chart in urban, but I could see it charting in Pop and /or rhythmic. Probably in the 30-35 range in Pop and in the 25-30 and in rhythmic. Keep your eye on it it could shock us and skyrocket because it is jamming - Strong Bump

"DO YOU UNDERSTAND" (Shy Glizzy f/ Tory Lanez & Gunna),
Debuting #40 on Urban formats;
via Glizzy Gang/300 Ent.,
[beginning w/ 801 Daily US Spins]. - I'm not really impressed by it, at this point it lacks originality or creativity because it sounds like the majority /the stereotype of whats out or expected from rappers now. It's ok, it's right In the middle, I've heard far worse and far better. It should do well in the club, the production has a lot of bass. I expect for it to chart in urban, this can be in the  30-35 range - Weak Dump

"WORKIN ME" (Quavo),
Debuting @ #49 on Urban formats;
Debuting @ #45 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
via QC/Motown/Capitol.,
[beginning w/ 671 + 481 Daily US Spins].  - The beat is alright, it has a little bit of bounce and energy in it, it should do well in the club. I'm not a fan of it lyrically, it's way too simple and the vocab and rhyme scheme are elementary and predictable. I've heard this flow and style from all of the Migos over and over, I'm waiting and anticipating to see what else they can do.  I've learned to not count anything Migos related out, regardless of the quality radio will give it a chance and people will gravitate to it n the strength of brand recognition. I expect it to be moderately successful on Urban 35-40 range because it's not really a playful fun club song. - Weak Bump

"JEALOUSLY" (Bri Steves),
Shipped to Urban on 8/12/18;
via Atlantic.,
[beginning w/ 205 Daily US Spins]. - I like this it stands out, it doesn't sound like anything currently on the radio. The sample of Jon B's classic They Don't Know is going to spark a lot of nostalgia. The song has a mid 90's feel but it still feels current and relevant. There aren't many ladies doing the rap sing combo right now. I hope it gets a chance on radio and some push, but I don't think this will chart because urban doesn't really push R&B type music. I don't think this will chart on any other formats either because they didn't send it to those and because it doesn't seem like it's not catchy enough for pop, it's too urban for adult contemporary.  - Strong Bump

"BEYOND" (Leon Bridges),
Debuting @ #26 on Adult Contemp/R&B formats;
Shipped to Urban on 8/17/18;
via Columbia.,
[beginning w/ 150 Daily US Spins]. - I like it, it's soulful, it's mature and heartfelt music. For those very reasons, it will never see the charts on Urban. it's too complex and musical and it doesn't fit the current sound. It'll do well in Adult Contemporary. I can see this getting in the 15-20 range quite easily.  - Weak Bump

"MADE FOR NOW" (Janet Jackson f/ Daddy Yankee),
Debuting @ #34 on Adult Contemp/R&B formats;
Shipped to Rhythmic/Club + Urban on 8/18/18;
via Rhythm-Nation/Cinq Music/GoDigitalMG.,
[beginning w/ 122 + 52 + 43 Daily US Spins]. - It's not gone get a shot on urban, it doesn't fit the sound and urban doesn't really show love to older artist. Adult contemporary will definitely show it love on the strength of it being Janet, this could chart in 15-20 range. Rhythmic/club might show it some love because it's definitely dance music so it may chart in the 40-45 range. It might get some pop spins and it could sneak in the 25-30 range there. - Weak Bump

"FINE" (Lenny Williams),
Debuting @ #36 on Adult Contemp/R&B formats;
via Bridle Ridge.,
[beginning w/ 96 Daily US Spins]. - Definitely won't get any love from urban. That's way too mature. It's old school, hard bottom two-step music for older crowds. Adult contemporary will give it love because Lenny Williams is music royalty in older circles. Young people won't know who he is neither would they be interested in knowing sadly. This will probably chart on Adult COntemporary in the 30-35 range. It's definitely music for the steppers - Weak Bump

"SWEET SENSATIONS" (Flo-Rida),
Shipped to Rhythmic/Club + Urban on 8/20/18;
via Poe Boy/Atlantic.,
[beginning w/ 85 + 27 Daily US Spins] - I'm not much of a Florida fan but the boy can make a song for the club/party atmosphere. Its a perfect use of Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch's Good Vibrations, it's actually better than the sample. This won't make urban charts, it has no shot there; but it will be heard on Pop and Rhythmic. Flo-Rida has always made hip-pop that was commercially safe and very acceptable to the predominately white club going audiences. You'll hear this in all of the familiar places, top 40, dance, EDM atmospheres etc. He may have a top 15-20 in rhythmic and 15-20 in pop hit on his hands. It just seems like a monster, and it seems like a perfect way for him to return after being away for a while. - Strong Bump

: BUMP IT! or DUMP IT!, VOL. 95

Green = Rising
Red = Declining

Now for this Week's New Singles.
Simple rules:
As we do every week, I'll give you the Top-9 new singles officially sent to Urban-format radio stations, that are either beginning to chart right now or expected to chart soon. In exchange, you can have & listen to them, and personally comment below, stating if you would *Bump It* or *Dump It* for each record and why... [Strong Bump, Weak Bump, Weak Dump, or Strong Dump]

BUMP IT! or DUMP IT!, VOL. 95

"EASTSIDE" (Benny Blanco f/ Hasley & Khalid),
Debuting @ #29 on Pop formats;
Debuting @ #48 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
Shipped to Urban + Adult Contemp/R&B on 8/8/18;
via Mad Love/Interscope.,
[beginning w/ 2,352 + 394 + 172 Daily US Spins]. - It's a pretty good song, I dig the collaboration and the production and the familiarity of the story. Unfortunately, I don’t think it has a chance on Urban formats for two reasons, it doesn't fit the sound and it’s rare to get any R&B vibes on the Urban format now. I don’t think it’s mature enough sounding for Adult Contemporary. I think it’s easily a top 20-25 for Pop, but I'm not sure if it sticks around for a long time, the song is good but it’s not catchy or addictive. It's not something I'm going to want to hear over and over again - Weak Bump

"NONSTOP" (Drake),
Debuting @ #19 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
Debuting @ #30 on Urban formats;
Shipped to Pop on 8/4/18;
via OVO/Young Money/Cash Money/Republic.,
[beginning w/ 1,882 + 1,363 Daily US Spins]. - I'm a little shocked this was shipped to radio, it’s a little harder sounding and less catchy than your average happy go lucky sing along Drake single. I like the beat, not much of a fan of the rest of it, it doesn’t give me any kind of feelings, positive or negative. I feel like we’re about to find out what the star power of Drake is if he can put out literally anything and it becomes a top 10 record. I’ll overestimate and say I expect it to be a top 15 -20, just because it’s Drake. It’ll probably do well across multiple formats - Weak Bump

"SWERVO" (G-Herbo f/ Southside),
Debuting @ #45 on Urban formats;
Shipped to Rhythmic/Club on 7/22/18;
via Machine/CMG/Epic.,
[beginning w/ 669 + 47 Daily US Spins]. - The beat is not bad, it’s nothing special but listenable. Lyrically it’s sub-par, I dislike his flow and the hook is wack to me, it’s lazy. I suppose it’s club music but it doesn’t feel or sound like a radio single to me. I feel like this is a low 30’s- 45 charting record, one of those records that’s constantly in jeopardy of falling out of the top 45. It’s close but it doesn’t quite have the sound of whats currently on the charts, neither does it have the appeal for it to be played over and over. - Weak Dump

"CHAMPION" (Nav f/ Travis Scott),
Debuting @ #44 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
Shipped to Urban + Pop on 7/31/18;
via XO/Republic.,
[beginning w/ 542 + 49 Daily US Spins]. - Sounds like a club song. It’s simple and kind of catchy, I can definitely see it on Rhythmic formats, but I can see it getting spins on Urban in 30-35 range.  It’s melodic, flow and sound effect driven, I’m not even sure what the lyrics are or what they are really talking about, but it’s a fun sounding record trip record that has some bounce to it. - Weak Bump

"TRIP" (Ella Mai),
Shipped to Urban + Rhythmic/Club;
+ Adult Contemp/R&B on on 8/9/18;
via 10 Summers/Interscope.,
[beginning w/ 464 + 112 + 48 Daily US Spins]. - I like the song, I like her voice, I like her vibe. I just feel like she’s in an impossible position considering how big and unescapable Boo’d up was and still continues to be. I think this song will chart and be given an opportunity to be a success, but I feel it’s going to fall short of Good up. It could comet of nowhere just like Good up and go straight to the top, because I didn’t see that one jumping off like that either, but it’s harder too do the second time around with expectations. I expect this to do well on Adult Contemporary, I'm going to say that it gets into 30-35 range on Urban, but for a much shorter time on the charts than Boo’d Up. This is good but I expect it’ll perform like a strong album cut rather than a sure enough hit. - Weak Bump

"HOPELESS ROMANTIC" (Wiz Khalifa f/ Swae Lee),
Shipped to Urban + Rhythmic/Club;
+ Adult Contemp/R&B on 8/7/18;
via Taylor Gang/Atlantic.;
[beginning w/ 357 + 214 + 15 Daily US Spins]. - I don’t like it. Nothing about the song stood out to me, The beat didn’t catch my attention, the hook is bland,  and there was nothing special about the lyrics that popped. The song quickly faded into background noise for me. This doesn’t sound like a wise choice for a radio single, it actually sounds like a weaker album cut. If I heard this on the radio, I’d actually tune out or switch stations, if I heard it in the club, I’d leave the dance floor and head to my seat or to the bar. I’d say if it charts, it’ll be in 40-45 range and short-lived - Strong Dump

"FEBRUARY 3RD" (Jorja Smith),
Debuting @ #26 on Adult Contemp/R&B formats;
Shipped to Rhythmic/Club on 8/6/18;
via FAMM Ltd.,
[beginning w/ 214 Daily US Spins] -This is definitely not a record for urban formats, it doesn’t have the catch or the bounce. It definitely fits Adult Contemporary formats better because it’s laid back and it focusses on the singing more. However, this song just doesn’t do it for me. The singing is alright but the words don’t pull or resonate with my heart or emotions, and her voice doesn’t jump out and make me take notice despite her showing range. The production fails to pull me in also, it left little to no impact on me, it didn’t jam. - Weak Dump

"REVERSE" (Vic Mensa f/ G-Eazy & Marshmello),
Shipped to Urban + Rhythmic/Club on 7/21/18;
via RocNation/Capitol.,
[beginning w/ 139 Daily US Spins]. - I kind of like it, I could definitely see it on urban and rhythmic formats. It’s simple, catchy, and bouncy, it’s also instructional so it’s perfect for girls to dance to; it’s perfect for the club. If it blows up I could see it getting a remix with at least one of the Migos on it. It fits the current sound so I could see this getting spins and charting in the 25-30 range possibly, now the uphill battle for it will be this; because it sounds so much like what's currently on radio, it’s not a must-have in every DJ's set so it has the potential to blend in or be replaceable. I like it tho- Weak Bump

"REACH 4 ME" (En Vogue),
Debuting @ #29 on Adult Contemp/R&B formats;
Shipped to Urban on 8/8/18;
via EVR/eOne.,
[beginning w/ 132 + 87 Daily US Spins]. - Has no shot on Urban formats, because they don’t play older artist new music, also this doesn’t fit the current sound of urban. It will do well on Adult Contemporary, they will definitely show it love and give it a shot. I can see †his being in the 20-25 range. It has a nice little upbeat groove for the steppers. It’s hard bottom music that’ll get the older folks groin. It’s ok, I'm not a huge fan of it, but I don’t have any specific or glaring complaints about it either. - Weak Bump
