Jeezy - TM104: The Legend Of The Snowman

I listened to Jeezy's #newalbum -TM104: The Legend Of The Snowman. It misses the mark severely. It’s the same flow and subject matter that he's known for but it’s lacking the grit, hunger and attention to detail. Jeezy has never been a particularly gifted lyricist or wordsmith but hes always had pretty good beats and his total song making has been strong; the beat selection on this album were problematic and didn’t match his style or lyrics. He didn’t bring it on any particular track, not even the familiar beats. I didn't hear a street, radio, or club single. It's not shocking, repeatable or nor does it jam. Jeezy also didn’t seem motivated, this might be his last Def Jam album, but i doubt this will be the way he wants to go out. I'd give it a  D.

Elle Varner - Ellevation

I listened to Elle Varner's #newalbum  - Ellevation. It,s a good listen it picks up where the last album left off. It’s solid from beginning to end. The two things i fear, 1. I don’t hear a crossover, standout single that can get play on multiple formats the way “refill” did. 2. I don’t know if she’ll still have the momentum, the space she occupied may have been filled by Ari Lennox. I liked “1 to10”, and “Wishing Well”.  I'd give it a B

Missy Elliot - Iconology

I listened to Missy Elliot's #newEP - Iconology.  It severely lacked luster. The beats were simple, not simply brilliant but basically just simple. One had a trap feel. But nothing exceptional or extra creative or different. Shes never really been lyrical but shes had good song making and personality( missy's music is best consumed in visual form); she didn’t really exhibit any of that on this project. Once you get past the excitement of her having new music out, there wasn’t much more to be excited about. “Why I still Love you” is the best song, it might get some radio play on Adult/R&B formats, but I'm not sure if it'll be a hit, and for me it's still only an alright song. The EP is not particularly memorable, repeatable, or standout. I’d have to give it an F. I only liked one song.

BUMP IT Or DUMP IT!, VOL. 138

[Strong Bump] = Unquestionable Smash Hit.  Extremely rewind-worthy and one of the better records out currently. Next to no flaws to pick out, that you'll be supporting/playing daily.  Something you predict will be a Top-15 Hit or higher.

[Weak Bump] = A Good Moderate Hit. Quality & above average; has more positives than negatives.  Might need to grow on you/others, but could catch on.  Not a clear smash hit, but something you'd genuinely want people to check out, so you’ll be supporting/playing it occasionally. Something you predict will be a Top-50 hit.

[Weak Dump] = Sup-Par Record. Not bad, but definitely missing the mark somewhere. More negatives than positives. Listenable, as you might like some parts but not the whole composition.  You don’t hate it and could understand its buzz, but you know you won’t be supporting/playing it much.  Something you predict that won’t be on airwaves very long or have much replay value.

[Strong Dump] = Complete Trash.  A record you absolutely hate and has next to no positives at all.  Garbage, and a waste of your time; that you’d want to warn people away from.  Something that you’re sure you’ll never be supporting/playing ever, and predict that it’ll fail commercially.

BUMP IT Or DUMP IT!, VOL. 138

"HOT GIRL SUMMER" (Megan Thee Stallion f/ Nicki Minaj),
Currently #22 on Urban formats;
Debuting @27 on Rhythmic/Club;
Shipped to Pop 08/10/19;
via 1051 Cert./300 Ent.,
[beginning w/ 1,552 + 1,071 Daily US Spins]. – For all of the hype, it’s kind of disappointing. The song is alright but it’s not all that it could be or was expected to be. It’s an alright sounding song, but it seems rushed and it doesn’t seem organic. There’s an obvious attempt to cash in on the trademark and buzz word, “Hot girl summer”. The production is alright, it’s club music but it doesn’t have a mood or any specific energy attached to it, It doesn’t make you want to get up and rush the dance floor. Lyrically it’s alright but not exceptional, and the hook is not a selling point. I wouldn’t be shocked to see it in the 1-10 range on urban and the 5- 15 range on rhythmic.   – Weak Bump

"100 SHOOTERS" (Future f/ Meek Mill & Doe-Boy),
Debuting #48 on Urban formats; #Now #44 with 720 daily US Spins
Shipped to Rhythmic/Club 08/02/19;
via Freebandz/Epic.,
[beginning w/ 684 Daily US Spins]. – It’s a street single more so than a radio single. The beat is simple, a nice little bass thump and a simple flute/recorder sound playing over it. It could play in the club, but it’s not a song that will make the club erupt or people storm the dance floor. I can see it playing on the radio, but it’s not the type of song I’d expect to hear over and over again throughout the day. I can see it charting on Urban in the 20-30 range.  – Weak Bump

"SHOTTA FLOW" (NLE Choppa),
Debuting #49 on Urban formats; Now #45 with 715 daily US Spins
Shipped to Rhythmic/Club 08/01/19;
via No Love Ent.,
[beginning w/ 684 Daily US Spins]. – It’s a street single. A menacing slow piano over some simple bass. It'll do well with people that like trap and drill. It’s similar to the type of music NBA Young Boy would make. Lyrically it’s simple, street and violent. It could play in the club, but it’s not for dancing or having a good time; it’s the type of song played early in the night for the thugs standing on the wall to mean mug to. It could get radio play, but it’s not a smash hit. It might be too street for the radio. I can maybe see it charting in the 30-40 range on urban – Weak Dump

"EASY RMX" (DaniLeigh f/ Chris Brown),
Debuting #40 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
Shipped to Urban 07/31/19;
via Def Jam.,
[beginning w/ 614 + 150 Daily US Spins]. – It’s a nice little R&B groove, it’s the type of song made for cruising to. I’m shocked it’s getting play on Rhythmic/club, the sound is not big enough and it seems too slow. I can see it charting in the 25-35 range on rhythmic, I don’t think it will cross over to any other formats. – Weak Bump

"ONE THOUGHT AWAY" (Asher Angel f/ Wiz Khalifa),
Debuting #50 on Pop formats;
Shipped to Rhythmic/Club + Urban 08/08/19;
via HITCO LLC.,
[beginning w/ 360 Daily US Spins]. – It’s a nice little song, it’s not an urban record but it wouldn’t shock me if urban stations played it occasionally, maybe in the mornings but not throughout the day in every block and on every show. It’s suburban R&B I can see it charting in the 30-40 range on Pop formats.  – Weak Bump

"KNOW" (Mary J Blige),
Debuting #24 on Adult/R&B formats;
Shipped to Urban 08/12/19;
via Matriach/Republic.,
[beginning w/ 346 Daily US Spins]. – It’s deeply soulful. Whoever produced this did some deep digging in the crates for this sample. It’s a direct sample of Albert Jones “Reflections”  with updated drums and slightly sped up. It’ll do well with hip hop heads that love samples, and people that love soul. It’ll do well on Adult /R&B, I can see it charting in the 5-15 range. – Strong Bump

"MR. BIG SHOT" (Nicole Bus),
Debuting #25 on Adult/R&B formats;
Shipped to Pop + Urban 08/03/19;
via Centillionaire/Roc Nation.,
[beginning w/ 326 Daily US Spins]. – I dig this a whole lot. It’s a lot of elements being mixed. It kind of sounds like an Amy Winehouse inspired song; hip hop drums, a driving piano, and a slight west Indian delivery in the singing. This will do well on R&B, I think it’ll get some early morning radio spins on urban, but I don’t see it getting play throughout the day. It’ll chart on R&B in the 15-25 range. – Strong Bump

"HOT SHOWER" (Chance The Rapper f/ MadeInTYO & DaBaby),
Shipped to Urban & Rhythmic/Club on 08/17/19;
via Chance The Rapper LLC.,
[beginning w/ 158 + 81 Daily US Spins]. – It’s way too simple, it’s not very catchy nor is it jamming. Lyrically, for the most part, it’s garbage minus DaBaby verse. I wouldn’t expect to hear this getting heavy rotation, it doesn’t have the repeat value. I don’t think this will chart. – Weak Dump

"GIRLFRIEND" (T-Pain f/ G-Eazy),
Shipped to Urban & Rhythmic/Club on 08/16/19;
via Nappy Boy/CMG/Orchard/Sony.,
[beginning w/ 79 + 75 Daily US Spins]. – The song is not bad, it’s just not exceptional or a hit. I wouldn’t be shocked to hear a DJ play it in the club, but it’s not the type of song I’d expect to hear every DJ play. I can’t imagine it getting a lot of radio play, I don’t understand where it would fit in. I don’t think it’ll chart – Weak Bump

BUMP IT Or DUMP IT!, VOL. 137:

"THE GIT' UP" (Blanco Brown),
Debuting #36 on Pop formats;
Debuting #33 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
Shipped to Urban 07/22/19;
via Warner Music/BMG Dist.,
[beginning w/ 4,210 + 875 + 124 Daily US Spins]. – I saw a video of a dude doing a dance to this 10 weeks ago, and just like with Old Town Road, I thought it was just a parity, but based on the fact that people liked it and shared it when I posted I expect this song will be a go also. I actually like this song a little better than Old Town Road, and I suspect others will too because it’s instructional, so people will want to urban line dance to it. I expect this will catch on and be played in the club and it’ll be a group dance song for people at parties for years to come. I expect this will chart Pop and Rhythmic in the 10-20 range. It’ll also eventually get attention in urban and chart in the 15-25 range. – Weak Bump

"PRETTY BITCHES IN THE TRAP" (Summerella),
Debuting #36 on Urban formats;
Shipped to Rhythmic/Club 06/22/19;
via Zone 4 Inc./Interscope,
[beginning w/ 899 Daily US Spins]. – I don’t like the song. The production could have been more creative, it’s basically just basic drums, and piano keys being attacked. Lyrically it sounds forced, like can we take a few buzzwords and mix them together and we should have a hit; it feels like someone was trying to take a short cut. II don’t see this doing well, it’ll chart in urban but I don’t think it’ll be around long. I thin it’ll chart in the 30-40 range in Urban. – Strong Dump

"SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT" (James Davis),
Debuting #16 on Adult/R&B formats;
Shipped to Urban 08/03/19;
via Motown/Capitol,
[beginning w/ 610 + 111 Daily US Spins]. – It’s a nice little calm song you’d hear on the R&B stations or early in the morning or late at night. It’s kind of boring and unimpressive, the production is basic, it sounds like someone is just leaning on a keyboard an every few measures going up a scale. The singing is also very monotone and airy. It’ll get play on Adult R&B, but it won't appeal to younger audiences. It’ll Chart R&B in the 10-20 range – Weak Dump

"ANTISOCIAL" (Ed Sheeran f/ Travis Scott),
Debuting #44 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
Shipped to Urban & Pop 08/07/19;
via Atlantic,
[beginning w/ 527 + 271 + 101 Daily US Spins]. – It’s very electric and computer sounding urban pop. It’s not really going to appeal to urban formats, a few urban listeners will listen to it because it has Travis attached to it. It’ll chart rhythmic in the 25-35 range. It may chart pop in the 30-40 range – weak bump

"MOTIVATION" (Normani),
Shipped to Pop & Urban 08/15/19;
via Keep Cool/RCA,
[beginning w/ 375 Daily US Spins]. – It’s a good upbeat song with decent singing. I just don’t know where it fits. The beat feels somewhat urban the singing feels pop. I don’t think this will chart because they not gone know where to place it, because it can’t be boxed in and it doesn’t really lean far enough one way or the other, - Weak Bump

"BLOW MY MIND" (Davido f/ Chris Brown),
Shipped to Tropical, Urban, & Rhythmic/Club 08/06/19;
via Columbia,
[beginning w/ 315 Daily US Spins].  – This is kind of the slower side of Afrobeat. I feel like Afrobeat is going to be treated the same way as reggae, meaning people will only take it seriously when it’s upbeat and can be played in the club. I don’t think American audiences that listen to radio are prepared for the more R&B style of fro beat, so I don’t think it will chart – Weak Dump

"SPIRIT" (Beyonce),
Debuting #29 on Adult/R&B formats;
Shipped to Pop & Urban 07/26/19;
via Parkwood/Columbia,
[beginning w/ 273 Daily US Spins]. – It’s a strongly sang song, that builds up into a big spiritual record. It builds like a big gospel choir song. This will undoubtedly do well on Adult R&B, but other than early morning inspiration for some of the morning shows, I can’t see it getting a whole lot of play on any other format throughout the day. It’ll chart in the 5-15 range in urban  – Weak Bump

"HOW YOU WANT IT" (Teyana Taylor f/ King Combs),
Shipped to Urban & Rhythmic/Club 08/09/19;
via GOOD Music/Def Jam,
[beginning w/ 266 Daily US Spins]. – The Mase and Total sample of What you want stand out immediately. They actually used the sample of Curtis Mayfield riff a little rawer than Mase, but added the tell me what you want on top of it just like Total did to give it the familiarity. This jams I can see it getting radio play and being in the club because it’s ratchet. I can see this charting Urban in the 20-30 range – Weak Bump

"HAIR DOWN"
(SiR f/ Kendrick Lamar),
Shipped to Urban 08/14/19;
via TDE/RCA,
[beginning w/ 208 Daily US Spins]. – It’s a very simple beat and simple concept. The singing is kind of airy, and Kendricks verse seems unmotivated. I don’t particularly like the song, it’s kind of boring,  and it doesn’t sound like a radio single at all. This wouldn’t make me want to check out more music from this artist. I don’t think it’ll chart. – Weak Dump
