The Panel 115

It’s that time again, for THE PANEL's BUMP IT or DUMP IT #115 review.
We have 3 HMV staff members this week, who'll take on the 9 new singles shipped to radio, to analyze how much they liked (or disliked) them & predict how successful they'll be. Here are the ratings across the board; And since we wanna share the interaction, if you’re interested in reading the full reviews from each person, feel free to check out their individual pages linked underneath their names. This week THE PANEL consisted of:

Check them all out, and see if you agree with some of us. Enjoy & #Salud.

Bump It Or Dump It #115

[Strong Bump] = Unquestionable Smash Hit.  Extremely rewind-worthy and one of the better records out currently. Next to no flaws to pick out, that you'll be supporting/playing daily.  Something you predict will be a Top-15 Hit or higher.

[Weak Bump] = A Good Moderate Hit. Quality & above average; has more positives than negatives.  Might need to grow on you/others, but could catch on.  Not a clear smash hit, but something you'd genuinely want people to check out, so you’ll be supporting/playing it occasionally. Something you predict will be a Top-50 hit.

[Weak Dump] = Sup-Par Record. Not bad, but definitely missing the mark somewhere. More negatives than positives. Listenable, as you might like some parts but not the whole composition.  You don’t hate it and could understand its buzz, but you know you won’t be supporting/playing it much.  Something you predict that won’t be on airwaves very long or have much replay value.

[Strong Dump] = Complete Trash.  A record you absolutely hate and has next to no positives at all.  Garbage, and a waste of your time; that you’d want to warn people away from.  Something that you’re sure you’ll never be supporting/playing ever, and predict that it’ll fail commercially.

Green = Rising
Red = Declining

Bump It or Dump 115
"BREAK UP WITH YOUR GIRLFRIEND..." (Ariana Grande),
Debuting @ #26 on Pop formats;
Debuting @ #36 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
+ Shipped to Urban 02/12/19;
via Republic.,
[beginning w/ 2,619 + 538 + 102 Daily US Spins]. – On the strength of it being Ariana I expect it to play on pop formats, she has a very top 40 appeal. I can definitely see it playing in the clubs, it’s not something you really dance to, but it’s the type of song you play early in the night while people are getting their drinks. Ariana is just really starting to pop up on the urban audiences radar, after Aretha’s funeral, so this has the chance of getting on urban formats. It has a beat that’s kind of dark and kind of heavy, and it’ll fit the sound profile behind a lot of the club and trap beats that are currently on urban format. I can see this charting in the 15-25 rang on Pop, in the 30-40 range on Rhythmic, and maybe sneaking in the 35-45 range on urban. – Weak Bump

"PLEASE ME" (Cardi B & Bruno Mars),
Debuting @ #27 on Pop formats;
Debuting @ #29 on Urban formats;
Debuting @ #27 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
via KSR/Atlantic.,
[beginning w/ 2,524 + 988 + 834 Daily US Spins]. – I like the combination of the old school club feel of the beat and the old school begging/ crooning. On the strength of it being Cardi and Bruno; two radio titans, I expect it’ll get play everywhere. The song is ok, but other than the popularity of the artist, it doesn’t really fit on any of the formats particularly well. It doesn’t really sound safe and radio friendly enough for pop but I expect it to chart in the 25-35 range. It doesn’t seem heavy enough for urban formats, but I expect it chart in the 15-20 range, and it’s not energetic enough to really be on rhythmic/club, but I can see it in the 25-35 range. – Weak Bump

"I'VE BEEN WAITING" (Lil Peep f/ ILoveMakonnen & Fall Out Boy),
Debuting @ #35 on Pop formats;
+ Shipped to Rhythmic/Club & Urban 02/09/19;
via AUTNMY/Columbia.,
[beginning w/ 1,408 + 168 + 129 Daily US Spins]. – It’s very light and friendly, definitely doesn’t scream club or dance, and it doesn’t have the edge or hardness to be acceptable in urban. I expect for this to chart in Pop in the 30-40 range. I don’t think it will chart urban, or rhythmic. It’s not for me. – Strong Dump

"I AM WHO THEY SAY I AM" (Youngboy N.B.A. f/ Kevin Gates & Quando Rondo),
Debuting @ #28 on Urban formats;
via Never Broke Again/Atlantic.,
[beginning w/ 1,051 + 182 Daily US Spins]. – The use of the Ashanti “ Rain On Me” Sample + added bass is very well done. It’s a very hard song, but it’s put together very well and the chemistry between the artist is very noticeable. It’s perfect for urban radio, it’s a full song, it has edge, it can be sang along to and the beat is on point. It has a little bit of something for everyone. – Strong Bump

"GIRLS HAVE FUN" (Tyga f/ G-Eazy & Rich The Kid),
Debuting @ #29 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
+ Shipped to Urban 02/13/19;
via Last Kings/EMPIRE Dist.,
[beginning w/ 794 + 301 Daily US Spins]. – It’s a light and fun song with the best part of it being the hook. I don’t think it’s catchy enough for pop formats, but I think it’ll chart in 25-35 range on rhythmic/club. I think it’ll eventually chart in the 35-45 range on urban formats. Im not really a fan of the song, nothing about it interested me or really kept my attention, if I heard it on the radio I’d probably turn, and if I heard in the club I can’t imagine myself making my way to the floor or staying on the floor unless was really feeling it. But I can lightly see the appeal.  – Weak Dump

"PROJECT DREAMS" (Marshmello f/ Roddy Ricch),
Debuting @ #31 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
+ Shipped to Urban 02/07/19;
via Joytime Collective/Warner Bros.,
[beginning w/ 677 + 74 Daily US Spins]. – The beat is ok and the rapping over it fits, despite the rapping being harder than the beat; but it’s not a type of beat that’s a stretch or unfamiliar to hip hop audiences. It’ll chart in the 30-40 range in rhythmic/club, even though it doesn’t seem to really be made for clubs. – Weak Bump

"POLEDANCER" (Wale f/ Megan Thee Stallion),
Debuting @ #47 on Urban formats;
Shipped to Rhythmic/Club 02/15/19;
via MMG/Warner Bros.,
[beginning w/ 573 + 62 Daily US Spins]. – The song is not bad it just doesn’t really sound like a radio hit. It sounds like it would play in the strip club. I think Megan is set to have a big year, so anything with her on it might get a push.I can see this getting in the 35-45 range on rhythmic/club, I don’t see it charting in urban because it’s starting too low. – Weak Bump

"ROLL SOME MO" (Lucky Daye),
Debuting @ #16 on Adult/R&B formats;
Shipped to Urban 02/04/19;
via Keep Cool/RCA.,
[beginning w/ 556 Daily US Spins]. – I like this, it has a nice little vibe and it groves. It’s very adult, it’s unapologetically traditional R&B. I don’t think it’ll chart outside of Adult R&B/ but it’ll chart high in the 10-20 range for Adult/R&B formats.- Weak Bump

"OCEAN DRIVE" (Smif-n-Wessun f/ Musiq Soulchild & Rapsody),
Shipped to Urban formats 02/12/19;
via Duck Down/Fontana Dist.,
[beginning w/ 59 Daily US Spins]. – It’s a good song but it’s too underground. It doesn’t even sound like a radio single, it’s a album cut. I don’t see this charting at all. – Weak Bump
