Bump It Or Dump It, 55

Strong Bump – A hit. I really like it. Rewind worthy

Weak Bump – It’s listenable. Something you have to be in the mood to listen to. Not Bad

Weak Dump – Don’t really like it. Might like parts of it but not the whole composition. Could grow on you. Underwhelming

Strong Dump – Get rid of it. Absolutely don’t like it. Garbage. Hate It

Simple rules:

As we do every week, I'll giving you the Top-9 new singles officially sent to Urban-format radio stations, that are either beginning to chart right now or expected to chart soon. In exchange, you can have & listen to them, and personally comment below, stating if you would *Bump It* or *Dump It* for each record and why... [Strong Bump, Weak Bump, Weak Dump, or Strong Dump]

"ROCKSTAR" (Post Malone f/ 21 Savage),
Debuting #36 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
+ Shipped to Urban formats 9/23/17;
via Republic [beginning w/ 723 + 378 Daily US Spins].  – It's perfect for radio and the club. It's simple, it has a full sound, it's an easy to follow rhythm, and it's easy to sing along to. The hook sales it as it's perfectly fit to the beat. It’s not a great song but it’s perfect for the masses, it’s blendable, it sounds just like everything else out subject wise, but it sets itself apart also. - Weak Bump

"WokeUpLikeThis*" (Playboi Carti f/ Lil Uzi Vert),
Debuting #41 on Urban formats;
via Interscope [beginning w/ 728 Daily US Spins]. – It's simple, repetitive and predictable. It's not very creative nor does it sound serious. But I could see it getting radio play. I can’t really imagine it in the club, the production doesn’t really lend itself to it but, stranger things have happened. I wouldn’t  say it's destined to be a smash, but a midlevel song that gets a little buzz and hovers around the lower middle parts of the charts.  Weak Dump

"SLOW HANDS" (Niall Horan),
Debuting #49 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
Shipped to Pop formats 9/24/17;
via Syco/Capitol [beginning w/ 386 Daily US Spins].  – The rhythm of it is interesting, it's almost like a sped up blues production. This is one of the songs that could crossover and people of all races and music backgrounds at least know what it is. You’ll definitely hear this used on some television show score. It’s a little bit of a toe-tapper. – Weak Bump

"CHILLS" (Charlie Wilson),
Currently #30 on Adult Contemp./R&B formats;
via RCA Records [252 Daily US Spins]. – This a tough one to call, it has everything, but it’s almost too good for radio. Older folks will gravitate to it, but Uncle Charlie has done such a good job of reinventing himself I wouldn’t be shocked if younger people checked it out.I could see it getting limited radio spins, but it honestly sounds like a song that’s not done justice until you hear it live. You may hear this song used in a movie or tv show.  Weak Bump

"WANT MORE" (Rotimi f/ Kranium),
Shipped to Urban formats + Rhythmic/Club formats 9/20/17;
via G-Unit/EMPIRE Dist. [beginning w/ 193 Daily US Spins]. – I like the parts of the song individually but together. I'm not feeling the spacey sounding xylophones over the dancehall drum pattern. The bass line is perfect. Not too much feeling execution of the vocals, it’s in between island and R&B and doesn’t lean heavy enough to one side to give it a clear direction. I don’t see a strong path ahead for this on radio or in clubs – Weak Dump

"PLAIN JANE" (A$AP Ferg),
Shipped to Urban formats 9/21/17;
via Polo Grounds/RCA [beginning w/ 188 Daily US Spins].  – No just No. This sounds like a comedy routine about how bad rap has become. The lyrics are so bad I tuned them out, the hook makes me laugh that someone actually recorded this. This amazingly will somehow get club spins, but I'm assuming only at the most rachet clubs. Unless they have an amazing clean version for this, I can’t see how this gets a bunch of radio play; this in no way, shape or form should be a radio single. – Strong Dump

"BLIND" (Tamar Braxton),
Debuting #43 on Adult Contemp./R&B formats;
via Tamartian Land/eOne [beginning w/ 116 Daily US Spins]. – The vocals are great. Doesn’t sound like a radio single, its way too stripped down. The lack of production makes it sound like a practice run of the song, it’s one level above unplugged or acapella. Adult Contemporary may give it a few spins midday, but I don’t see it getting prime time placement or crossing over. – Weak Bump

"LET YOU DOWN" (NF),
Shipped to Urban formats 9/24/17;
via Capitol [beginning w/ 77 Daily US Spins]. – It's in the same vein as a Yelawolf or MGK. I like it but sending it to the urban radio may have been a mistake, this may have had a better shot with pop formats as it's way too different from whats currently receiving play from urban radio. I don’t see this being able to make that climb into regular rotation. The song is pretty good however. – Weak Bump

"BAM" (Jay Z f/ Damian Marley),
Shipped to Urban formats + Rhythmic/Club formats 9/26/17;
via Roc Nation [beginning w/ 68 Daily US Spins]. – It’s below Jay-Z standards. The hook doesn’t really work, Jay never gets in the pocket of the beat and rides it, his flow is lazy and not very organized. He seems to be more so talking than actually rapping. – Strong Dump

Bump It or Dump It, Vol 54

Strong Bump – A hit. I really like it. Rewind worthy

Weak Bump – It’s listenable. Something you have to be in the mood to listen to. Not Bad

Weak Dump – Don’t really like it. Might like parts of it but not the whole composition. Could grow on you. Underwhelming

Strong Dump – Get rid of it. Absolutely don’t like it. Garbage. Hate It

Simple rules:

As we do every week, I'll be giving you the Top-9 new singles officially sent to Urban-format radio stations, that are either beginning to chart right now or expected to chart soon. In exchange, you can have & listen to them, and personally comment below, stating if you would *Bump It* or *Dump It* for each record and why... [Strong Bump, Weak Bump, Weak Dump, or Strong Dump]

Debuting #37 on Pop formats;
+ Shipped to Urban formats & Rhythmic/Club formats 9/9/17;
via Syco/Epic [beginning w/ 1,107 + 194 Daily US Spins]. – The Old Rag Time style piano stands out, it’s a sound you don’t hear often. It’s extremely catchy. The feature works despite it being way outside of young thugs normal style. I can see it getting some crossover appeal. It’s exceptionally well produced and creative.  Strong Bump
"LOVE." (Kendrick Lamar f/ Zacari),
Debuting #46 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
Debuting #50 on Urban formats;
Shipping to Pop formats 9/21/17;
via TDE/Aftermath/Interscope
[beginning w/ 417 + 447 Daily US Spins].  – His superstardom might make this a hit, but other than it sounding different and stand out compared to what’s on the radio, it’s one of the weaker songs on the album. The beat gives me a headache and it’s way too much singing going on. The fact that its easy to sing along to might make it appealing in the club or to someone just driving around. It’s too simple for me, I prefer complex creative Kendrick, this sounds like a failed experiment to me. – Weak Bump

"TOO HOTTY" (Quality Control f/ Migos),
Currently #44 on Urban formats;
via Motown/Capitol [622 Daily US Spins].  – The beat is pretty decent, but the rest of the song is a pretty numbing experience. Been there done that, I've heard this flow, and subject matter from the Migos over and over again and the thrill is long gone, they are becoming a one trick pony that isn't interested in expanding or growing. We know they can do this, but what else? Due to the lack of an educated audience or an audience that demands more from their artist, this has just as good a shot as anything else to become a major hit because the hip-hop audience is not interested in expanding. – Weak Dump

"HE LIKE THAT" (Fifth Harmony),
Debuting #50 on Pop formats;
Shipped to Urban formats + Rhythmic/Club formats 9/16/17;
via Syco/Epic [beginning w/ 450 + 94 Daily US Spins]. – No! Just NO! It sounds like a parody of pop song taking parts of hip-hop slang and mashing them together. – Strong Dump

"YOU ALREADY KNOW" (Fergie f/ Nicki Minaj),
Debuting #48 on Pop formats;
Shipped to Urban formats + Rhythmic/Club formats 9/4/17;
via Double Dutchess Music Prod/BMG
[beginning w/ 522 + 67 Daily US Spins]. – I'm not feeling this makeover of Fergie into a rapper. Even though the delivery and flow aren't bad, it just doesn’t sound authentic, it sounds contrived. I expect pop audiences to eat it up, I don’t know what to expect from urban audiences. I'll admit the intricacies of the production are on point, I expect to somebody to rework it and make it harder very soon and trim some of the unnecessary parts of the beat. The Nicki verse was underwhelming as well, her verse was not much better than Fergie's – Weak Dump

"SEE YOU AGAIN" (Tyler, The Creator f/ Kali Uchis),
Debuting #46 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
Shipped to Urban formats 9/4/17;
via Columbia [beginning w/ 423 + 94 Daily US Spins].  – I expect weirdness from Tyler, and this fits the bill. It sounds like 3 different songs pasted together and I don’t like either one of them. – Strong Dump

"DOIN' IT" (MoneyBagg Yo),
Shipped to Urban formats 9/14/17;
via N-Less/Interscope [beginning w/ 299 Daily US Spins]. – (Long Sigh) vocally sounds like Kevin Gates with way less skill. It sounds like everything else on the radio or being played in the club, nothing stands out about it. While it's mixable, it has no it factor, so it’ll probably get lost in the shuffle. It could hit or it could get ignored.  Strong Dump

"DEADWOOD" (Toni Braxton),
Debuting #30 on Adult Contemp./R&B formats;
+ Shipping to Urban formats 9/23/17;
via Def Jam [beginning w/ 249 Daily US Spins]. – It sounds like it should be the score to Western Movie, the cowboy sounding lead guitar and then the big dramatic expansion sounds real theatrical. This is as close to classic Toni Braxton as I’ve heard in a long time, this should play really well with her old fans. I expect to hear it on a movie or tv show, but I expect limited radio spins. I wouldn’t be shocked if this crossed over and we see her singing this at like a country music award show or something, it has that feel – Weak Bump

"UNO MAS" (N.O.R.E. f/ Pharrell),
Shipped to Urban formats 9/9/17;
via Militainment/Mass Appeal [beginning w/ 92 Daily US Spins]. -  I wanted to like it, I feel like I should, but whatever it is, it's not doing it for me. It may get some club spins, I can’t imagine it on the radio. – Strong Dump

Bump Or Dump 53

Strong Bump – A hit. I really like it. Rewind worthy

Weak Dump – Don’t really like it. Might like parts of it but not the whole composition. Could grow on you. Underwhelming

"TOO GOOD AT GOODBYES" (Sam Smith),
Debuting #31 on Pop formats;
+ Shipped to Adult Contemp formats 9/9/17;
via Capitol [beginning w/ 1,849 + 276 Daily US Spins]. Definitely, for pop formats, it has an R&B vibe but it doesn’t quite have the soul that will make it a mass crossover. But it will definitely crossover for eclectic crowds and stations. I can see it getting some urban radio spins. Will definitely pop up on a television show or movie score.  Weak Bump

"NO LIMIT" (G-Eazy f/ A$AP Rocky & Cardi B),
Shipped to Urban formats;
+ Rhythmic/Club formats 9/11/17;
via RCA Records [beginning w/ 403 + 238 Daily US Spins]. – Has a hard driving beat. It’s definitely made for the club, but not necessarily for dancing, unless we’re talking about the strip club. It’s stand on the wall and head bob music. It has the possibility of getting radio play, it still fits the format, yet it stands out from everything that’s popular right now. It’s production and flow driven, lacks content or lyrical skill never the less …-  Weak Bump

"TEEFUS" (300LBS of Guwop),
Debuting #50 on Urban formats;
via 80-Proof Inc. [beginning w/ 399 Daily US Spins]. – This is definitely club music. Not sure it’s a radio single, but it’s the type of song you wouldn’t mind hearing in the club. It’s essentially lean music, its perfect if you’re drunk or high, but it’s  not something to listen to sober and ride around to. Listening to it sober you’ll focus on all the imperfections in it. – Weak Bump

"SKY WALKER" (Miguel f/ Travis Scott),
Debuting #50 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
+ Shipped to Pop, Urban, & Adult Contemp formats 9/1/17;
via ByStorm/RCA [beginning w/ 329 + 246 Daily US Spins].  – This is also trippy music. You could listen to this in the club when you’re drunk and/or high, but it’s not for regular consumption, so not really a radio single. I can see it being played in a club scene in a movie or tv show. – Weak Dump

"THE WEEKEND" (SZA),
Shipped to Urban formats + Rhythmic/Club formats 9/4/17;
via T.D.E./RCA [beginning w/ 197 Daily US Spins]. Expect the song to be popular because it’s simple and it has an easy to sing along to hook.  It’s kind of rachet, so it should be real popular among young folks in the club. It will definitely pop up on some tv or movies because it’s the perfect modern song about cheating and empowering to side chicks. – Weak Bump

"FLIPMODE" (Velous f/ Fabolous & Chris Brown),
Shipped to Urban formats 9/7/17;
via Swanky Music/Coke Boys [beginning w/ 119 Daily US Spins]. – This could go either way as far as being a radio single. It’s definitely for the club, but it’s a song you would play at the top of the night to warm up before you get into the main part of a set. – Weak bump

"LOSE MY MIND" (Blacc Zacc f/ Money Man),
Shipped to Urban formats 9/7/17;
via South Coast/Dirty Money [beginning w/ 119 Daily US Spins]. – Doesn’t sound like a radio single, it sounds way too underground and lacks appeal for the masses. This is more of an album or mixtape cut. It might get a few spins in some clubs, it sounds like the perfect soundtrack to a small seedy club. – Weak Dump

"THE REAL THING DON'T CHANGE" (Porcelan),
Currently #40 on Adult Contemp. formats;
via M.I.M.E. Corp [102 Daily US Spins].  -  Definitely for a more mature audience, but I don’t expect heavy rotation. It’s the type of song contemporary stations will play early in the morning and then after lunch, you wouldn’t hear it again. Could also be played on a smooth jazz station, but I don’t see it crossing over or being played in a club.It’s the type of song a band may cover in a club/lunge or used at a karaoke where people take their singing seriously. – Weak Dump

"GIRLFRIEND" (Busta Rhymes f/ Tory Lanez & Vybz Kartel),
Shipped to Urban formats;
+ Rhythmic/Club formats 8/31/17;
via Conglomerate Ent/Epic [beginning w/ 80 Daily US Spins]. – It’s perfect for the club/ dancehall. I expect this will get some spins around Carnival season. I don’t believe it’s a radio single for the masses, neither does it have crossover appeal; it’s not what people want or expect from Busta Rhymes. It sounds like a song he would be featured on not as the lead artist. Weak Dump

Bump Or Dump 52

Weak Dump – Don’t really like it. Might like parts of it but not the whole composition. Could grow on you. Underwhelming

"WHAT LOVERS DO" (Maroon 5 f/ SZA),
Debuting #26 on Pop formats;
via 222/Interscope [beginning 3,328 Daily US Spins]. – It’s a pretty decent match, one I wouldn’t expect, but it works fairly well. Honestly, I wouldn't think SZA would be on a group like Maroon 5’s radar, so shout out to them for that. It's Pop, but more like a b or c level pop song, it’s not something I’d expect to cross over to the masses, other formats or become inescapable. – Weak Dump

"QUESTIONS" (Chris Brown),
Currently #30 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
via RCA Records [1,049 Daily US Spins].  – I appreciate the love he gave for island music 9 soca and dancehall) and the attempt, but it's poorly executed. The production is too Americanized Pop or Dance, to the fact that it couldn’t even be mixed in well with a dancehall or soca set. If it would have been done better the timing would have been perfect as it's getting closer to Carnival season. For fans of the culture and DJs in the culture, the acapella's might get some use. But the entire song probably not. It's not even a good introduction for American pop dance audiences to soca /dancehall – Strong Dump

"FIGURES" (Jessie Reyez),
Debuting #49 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
+ Shipped to Urban formats 8/18/17;
via FMLY/Island [beginning w/ 435 Daily US Spins]. – I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it. I don’t know if it's a radio single or a club song. It may work on urban formats. It sounds too unplugged for radio, especially urban radio. I can see it popping up in movies and television scenes tho. – Weak Bump

"POST & DELETE" (Zoey Dollaz f/ Chris Brown),
Shipped to Urban formats 8/29/17;
via Epic Records [beginning w/ 257 Daily US Spins]. – Ok, it’s extremely mixable, it’ll work perfectly with all of the trap music sounding stuff, so I can see this having widespread use in clubs, mix show sets, and possibly getting prime time radio spins. It’s simple and catchy, and the beat grabs your attention. – Weak Bump

"LOVE A LOSER" (Cassie f/ G-Eazy),
Shipped to Urban formats;
+ Rhythmic/Club formats 8/11/17;
via Bad Boy Ent/Epic [118 Daily US Spins]. – It doesn’t sound like it should be on pop formats. I’m not sure what it is about it, but it doesn’t quite work for me, maybe it’s the subject matter or the delivery. It just doesn’t sound like it’s for the intended audience. – Weak Dump

"LIVE UP TO MY NAME" (Baka Not Nice),
Shipped to Urban formats 8/27/17;
via OVO/Warner Bros. [beginning w/ 101 Daily US Spins]. – It’s mixable. It’ll be hit or miss because it doesn’t stand out or have any originality to it. It’s a song with 50/50 potential, it could get radio play, could play prime time, could play in the club, it’s simple, predictive and easy to sing along too. But If you never heard the song you wouldn’t be missing out on anything – Strong Dump

"UNTOUCHABLE" (Youngboy Never Broke Again),
Shipped to Urban formats 8/29/17;
via N.B.A. LLC/Atlantic [beginning w/ 96 Daily US Spins]. – Points for not going the typical trap sounding route that so popular right now. But the song writing ability needs to be tightened up, as well as the flow and delivery. It’s lazily delivered and unfocused and doesn’t sound professional or up to par to be a radio single. It’ has a very underground/pirated radio sound. – Strong Dump

"PEOPLE SAY" (Wu-Tang Clan f/ Redman),
Shipped to Urban formats 9/2/17;
via 36 Chambers/eOne Music [beginning w/ 76 Daily US Spins]. – I like the production, it's nice to hear a completely produced beat, the bars and delivery are good but it doesn’t current or them at their best. It sound like it could be an unreleased song from years ago; it has a nostalgic feel. Not sure what the possibilities are for the song are based on what radio listeners are conditioned to like. This could pop up on some video games. I don’t expect club or much radio play. – Weak Bump

"HUNGRY" (Fergie f/ Rick Ross),
Shipped to Pop formats & Urban formats 8/26/17;
via Double Dutchess Music Prod./BMG. – An unlikely pairing. I can’t take Fergie serious as a rapper, this is way out of her lane, and it doesn’t seem authentic. The production is interesting and epic, but the bars don’t match that intensity, the bars are too spaced out and slow. A beat like that requires a delivery with a higher word count and stronger delivery. Expect for someone to drop a freestyle over it and kill it. It sounds too hard for pop radio and not interesting enough for urban radio. It sounds like an underground cut. But it would be perfect for a video game or movie, based on the production. – Weak Bump
