BUMP IT! or DUMP IT!, VOL. 68

Weak Bump – It’s listenable. Something you have to be in the mood to listen to. Not Bad. A Good Moderate Hit. Quality & above average; has more positives than negatives. Might need to grow on you/others, but could catch on. Not a clear smash hit, but something you'd genuinely want people to check out, so you’ll be supporting/playing it occasionally. Something you predict will be a Top-50 hit.

Weak Dump – Don’t really like it. Might like parts of it but not the whole composition. Could grow on you. Underwhelming. Sup-Par Record. Not bad, but definitely missing the mark somewhere. More negatives than positives. Listenable, as you might like some parts but not the whole composition. You don’t hate it and could understand it’s buzz, but you know you won’t be supporting/playing it much. Something you predict that won’t be on airwaves very long or have much replay value.

Strong Dump – Get rid of it. Absolutely don’t like it. Garbage. Hate It.
Complete Trash. A record you absolutely hate and has next to no positives at all. Garbage, and a waste of your time; that you’d want to warn people away from. Something that you’re sure you’ll never be supporting/playing ever; and predict that it’ll fail commercially.

No drop off this week

Now for this week's singles.
Simple rules
As we do every week, I'll give you the Top-9 new singles officially sent to Urban-format radio stations, that are either beginning to chart right now or expected to chart soon. In exchange, you can have & listen to them, and personally comment below, stating if you would *Bump It* or *Dump It* for each record and why... [Strong Bump, Weak Bump, Weak Dump, or Strong Dump]

"BARTIER CARDI" (Cardi B f/ 21 Savage),
Debuting #46 on Urban formats;
Shipped to Rhythmic/Club formats;
+ Pop formats 12/26/17;
via Atlantic.
[beginning w/ 550 + 290 + 89 Daily US Spins].  I honestly really don’t like it. It’s lyrically wack, 21’s verse is slightly better than Cardi’s, but the established cadence easily fools you into believing that it’s skillful lyrics are being displayed. This should do well on radio and in the club and I expect a high volume of daily spins considering who’s on the track. – Weak Bump

"STIR FRY" (Migos),
Debuting #47 on Urban formats;
Shipped to Rhythmic/Club formats 12/20/17;
via Quality Control/Capitol/Motown.
[beginning w/ 525 + 114 Daily US Spins] – It’s a different style of production and hook for Migos. So that’s a positive. But lyrically it’s still hook repetitive, simple, low skilled and minute in vocabulary usage, I expect it to get radio play, a lot of people will like it without knowing that it’s Migos and then it will really cross over. – Weak Bump

"BEST FRIEND"
(Sofi Tukker f/ NERVO, The Knocks, & Alisa Ueno),
Shipped to Pop formats;
+ Rhythmic/Club formats 12/19/17;
via HeavyRoc Music Inc.
[beginning w/ 435 + 101 Daily US Spins]. – I'm not sure if it's for the radio. But it has a place in the marketing world. I guarantee you’ll hear this sync licensed on commercials and in movies or television. It’s pretty good, I can’t see a lot of crossover appeal. But in rhythmic and pop it’ll be perfect. – Weak Bump

"ICE TRAY" (Quality Control f/ Quavo & Lil Yachty),
Shipped to Urban formats 12/25/17;
via Quality Control/Capitol/Motown.
[beginning w/ 89 Daily US Spins]. The beat is alright, The hook is wack and I'm not sure of the purpose of the song. If it’s supposed to be a diss record towards Joe Budden it’s severely missing some necessary qualities of a great diss record (direct, disrespectful, shocking, straight to the point and replayable). This just sounds like trolling or taking a quick shot at Joe Budden. Lyrically and flow wise it’s subpar. I don’t expect a lot of radio play, it kind of blends in. – Weak Dump

"ROCKET" (En Vogue),
Shipped to Adult Contemp./R&B formats;
+ Urban formats 12/26/17;
via eOne.
[beginning w/ 51 Daily US Spins]. – This is classic R&B. It’ll do well with older crowds, but I don’t think most of the urban formats will give it a chance; not that it’s not modern. This level of artistry and professionalism just doesn’t get pushed to the masses anymore. This will be a big hit in concert. – Weak Bump

"HOLA" (Flo-Rida f/ Maluma),
Shipped to Latin/Tropical formats 12/16/17;
Shipping to Rhythmic/Club formats;
+ Urban formats 1/5/18;
via International Music/Poe Boy/Atlantic.
[beginning w/ 37 Daily US Spins]. I can definitely see it on pop and Latin formats, it’s partyish but it too bubble gum most urban formats. Should do well in top 40, open format and pop clubs. I'm not sure how much radio play it will receive and I don’t expect it to cross over. It’s not bad, but it doesn’t really do it for me. – Weak Dump

"DREAM KILLA" (Xscape),
Shipped to Adult Contemp./R&B formats 12/26/17;
via eOne.
[beginning w/ 34 Daily US Spins]. –It’s nice and smooth, but it doesn’t seem like a radio single and definitely not the type of splash Xscape would need to generate a buzz for them getting back together. It’s not a bad song, just not a big hit and I don’t expect it to get a lot of radio play. – Weak Bump

"RESET" (Ohio Players),
Shipped to Adult Contemp./R&B formats;
+ Rhythmic/Club formats 12/7/17;
via Fire 4 Hire/KES Dist.
[beginning w/ 21 Daily US Spins]. – It’s not bad, it just sounds way out of place. I don’t think it has a shot on the radio, not even on adult contemporary with older crowds. I don’t think it’s a single, but I’m glad the Ohio players are still making music – Weak Dump

"PHONE JUMPIN" (Dave East f/ Wiz Khalifa),
Shipped to Urban formats 12/7/17;
via Mass Appeal/Def Jam. – Doesn’t sound like a radio single. It sounds like something for a mixtape or a mix show but not what you would expect to hear on regular radio. I don’t expect much radio play. - Weak Dump

BUMP IT! or DUMP IT!, VOL. 67

Strong Bump – A hit. I really like it. Rewind worthy. Unquestionable Smash Hit. Extremely rewind-worthy and one of the better records out currently. Next to no flaws to pick out, something that you'll be supporting/playing daily. Something you predict will be a Top-15 Hit or higher.

Big Album Alert
Eminem released his first album in 4yrs. There was a pretty decent buzz and anticipation for the album despite the release of two lackluster singles “ Walk on Water” and “Untouchable”. The album is going to be something that people have mixed emotions and criticisms about. For me, it was an extremely average album, and not Eminem average, just average. If I could use a sports reference, it’s like watching one of your favorite athletes stick around way too long. There are flashes of brilliance but far and few in between and there’s no elite level skill displayed. He’s not even a savvy old veteran that uses tricks of the trade to still get the job done. It’s an album that can’t compete with any of the younger top-tier talents. Some things that are noticeably missing are a clear hit, and a radio single. You can tell Dr. Dre had nothing to do with this album, Royce da 5’9” had nothing to do with it, I’m wondering if he market tested this album before releasing it and if he reached out to any heavily respected hip producers. Also very much missing from the album is the wit, creativity, and comedy he displays when he goes into Slim Shady mode. I’m not sure if this is his last album or not but unless he has one last act in him, it should be because he doesn’t seem to be able to make an album many will enjoy anymore and he doesn’t seem to be having fun or have the hunger.

Now for this week's singles.
Simple rules:
As we do every week, I'll give you the Top-9 new singles officially sent to Urban-format radio stations, that are either beginning to chart right now or expected to chart soon. In exchange, you can have & listen to them, and personally comment below, stating if you would *Bump It* or *Dump It* for each record and why... [Strong Bump, Weak Bump, Weak Dump, or Strong Dump]

"NEVER BE THE SAME" (Camila Cabello),
Debuting #40 on Pop formats;
Shipped to Rhythmic/Club formats 12/15/17;
via Syco/Epic.
[beginning w/ 1,046 Daily US Spins]. – Not my cup of tea. I'm not sure how to explain the sound of it. I suppose it could blow up, but it would require a lot of young people to love it. It sounds like a teenage song. – Weak Dump

"RIVER" (Eminem f/ Ed Sheeran),
Debuting #43 on Pop formats;
Shipped to Rhythmic/Club formats;
+ Urban formats 12/16/17;
via Shady/Aftermath/Interscope.
[beginning w/ 932 + 321 Daily US Spins]. -  It's decent but not what’s needed or expected for an Eminem single. It lacks the blend of catchy, witty, and exceptionally skilled that Eminem in his prime exhibited. Because its Em I expect for it to get some spins, but I don’t know how far up the charts it gets or how long it stays. – Weak Dump

"DREAM GIRL"
(Ncredible Gang f/ Nick Cannon, Jeremih, & Ty Money),
Debuting #48 on Urban formats;
Shipped to Rhythmic/Club formats 12/17/17;
via Ncredible Ent/Sony RED Dist.
[beginning w/ 490 Daily US Spins].  – It’s not horrible but it does a disservice to the Christopher Williams “I’m Dreamin” sample. Nobody really brought it; no one delivered an exceptional or standout performance vocally or lyrically, and the producer could have done so much more creatively with the beat. Too many opportunities were left unexplored. – Weak Dump

"ALL I WANNA DO" (Dev),
Debuting #46 on Rhythmic/Club format;
Shipped to Urban formats + Pop formats 12/12/17;
via DEVISHOTS/Island.
[beginning w/ 431 + 63 Daily US Spins]. – It’s too popish. It doesn’t sound authentic. But because its kind of club sounding it may get some spins- Weak Dump

"SHOOTERS" (Tory Lanez),
Shipped to Urban formats;
+ Rhythmic/Club formats 12/03/17;
via Mad Love/Interscope.
[beginning w/ 131 Daily US Spins]. – The production is the real sale here. The song is alright, it’s not bad.  I could see this being played in the club; because of how unique the beat is it’d be one of those songs people recognize instantly and get hype for. I don’t feel like it’s a radio smash, it may get a few spins but this could be big in the underground – Weak Bump

"AMERICAN DREAM" (Jeezy f/ J. Cole & Kendrick Lamar),
Shipped to Urban formats;
+ Rhythmic/Club formats 12/18/17;
via YJ Music/CTE/Def Jam.
[beginning w/ 123 + 74 Daily US Spins]. – The only thing that seems like a hit about it is the big names in the collaboration. The beat and overall song making could have been better. None of the verses really stood out, the hook was just alright. Just because of who is on the track it may get a few spins and make it to the middle of the sharts, - Weak Bump

"PINEAPPLE SKIES" (Miguel),
Shipped to Contemp./R&B formats;
+ Urban formats + Pop formats 12/12/17;
via ByStorm/RCA.
[beginning w/ 66 + 52 Daily US Spins]. – It’s a pretty decent song, doesn’t sound like a radio hit to me more like a solid album cut. It’s gone be tough sledding for this one to get regular airplay; we’re accustomed to Miguel delivering something big. – Weak Bump

"TOOK US A BREAK" (Lil Kim),
Shipped to Urban formats 12/06/17;
via eOne.
[beginning w/ 62 Daily US Spins]. – It’s a different and unexpected sound for Lil Kim. But it’s perfect for whats expected for today's listener. I don’t think it’s a smash, but it has a chance to gain some traction. I could hear this in the club, and wouldn’t be shocked if it made it to the middle of the charts. – Weak Bump

"LOVE LIKE OURS" (Estelle f/ Tarrus Riley),
Shipped to Contemp./R&B formats;
+ Urban formats 12/15/17;
via 1980 Records/BMG Dist.
[beginning w/ 46 Daily US Spins]. – I like this song a lot, it fits Estelle really well, and for her to get an official reggae singer like Taurus Riley is big. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s going to get a lot of spins because American radio only seems to want to support reggae dancehall and it neglects the other forms of Caribbean music. I'd be shocked if it makes the regular rotation and gains traction.   Strong Bump
