Bump it or Dump it

Strong Bump – A hit. I really like it. Rewind worthy

Weak Bump – It’s listenable. Something You have to be in the mood to listen to. Not Bad

Weak Dump – Don’t really like it. Might like parts of it but not the whole composition. Could grow on you. Underwhelming

Strong Dump – Get rid of it. Absolutely don’t like it. Garbage. Hate It

"BUTTERFLY EFFECT" (Travis Scott),
Currently #45 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
+ Debuting #47 on Urban formats;
via Epic Records [469 + 493 Daily US Spins]. – Perfect for the radio and club scene, it’s  mixable. It’s simple, repetitive, and it’s full of bass. It’s kind of catchy, and easy enough to sing a long to. I expect this one to climb pretty rapidly, but I’d be shocked if it becomes a nationwide hit. But it’s perfect for bumping out of your car stereo.  Weak Bump

"ATTENTION" (Charlie Puth),
Currently #37 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
via Atlantic [671 Daily US Spins]. – I can see it getting a few spins in clubs that play top 40 or open format. I'm not sure it makes the crossover into urban radio or clubs, however, it does have a little groove to it so for eclectic people it may have some appeal. Weak Bump

"FETISH" (Selena Gomez f/ Gucci Mane),
Currently #48 on Pop formats;
+ Shipped to Urban formats on 7/24/17;
via Interscope [611 Daily US Spins]. -  The style in which it's sung, the beat, the addition of Gucci Mane are what makes this bankable for urban radio; however, it’s very underwhelming. However it’s very mixable, it may find it’s way into some urban clubs.  Weak Bump

"WHAT YOU LIKE"
(24Hrs f/ Chris Brown & Ty Dolla $ign),
Debuting #46 on Urban formats;
via Private Club/Commission [522 Daily US Spins]. – Has a strong production that jumps through the speakers. This should be all over the club and party scene. It works for radio, this might climb fast and high. – Strong Bump

"FOREPLAY" (Jalen Santoy),
Debuting #49 on Urban formats;
via Ventwood/EMPIRE Dist. [405 Daily US Spins].  – I’ve never heard of this cat, but I like the style. I'd be interested to hear more from him. I hope this gets plenty spins. The production is strong and completely different from everything else out right now. It's extremely jazzy and attention grabbing and the saxophone Is addicting. His lyrics and flow are on point. This is kind of adult hip hop, it’s a break from the usual party and bullshit. He should find an audience with Jay Cole, Big Sean, Logic, and Kendric fans. I wouldn’t mind hearing this remixed also. Strong Bump

"SUMMER BODY" (The-Dream f/ Fabolous),
Shipped to Urban formats on 7/22/17;
via RocNation/Republic [beginning w/ 199 Daily US Spins]. – This has the potential to be a monster. I can easily see it taking over radio and club scenes. And if they put a decent video out it could grab video scenes. The production is strong, the bass thumps hard, and it has the head nod factor. And it’s an easy listen, hardly listened to the words but got caught off in the beat. The beat is flexible, I can easily see this being played at a Carribean club also. The only problem is it’s seasonal. This should have been dropped at the beginning of Summer to maximize the catch. Strong Bump

"CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT YOUR LOVE" (Jesse Campbell),
Debuting #35 on Adult Contemp. formats;
via Capitol [118 Daily US Spins]. – This should do well with older, jazz and smooth jazz crowds. I can easily see this it at the top of R&B sets right before the DJ slows it down to get into the late night love segments. Has a nice groove to it.  Weak Bump

"HAMMER TIME" (Lecrae f/ 1K Phew),
Shipped to Urban formats + Rhythmic/Club formats 7/22/17;
via Reach/Columbia [beginning w/ 106 Daily US Spins].  – I’m a little caught off guard with Lecrae doing a trap sound, but it may be brilliant. It’s extremely mixable and blends in perfectly with what’s on the radio. It’s everything that defines trap; simple, rhythmic, and repetitive.  This may shoot up pretty quick, and you might hear this in the club. Weak Bump

"MOVIN' AROUND" (CyHi The Prynce f/ Schoolboy Q),
Shipped to Urban formats + Rhythmic/Club formats 7/11/17;

via GOOD Music/Sony [beginning w/ 74 Daily US Spins]. – I can see why this one is struggling. The production is not all that good, the trap style delivery doesn’t compliment what CyHi does best. School Boy Q’s verse is pretty decent. They may want to look for a different single, as I don’t really see a spot for this to squeeze in.  Weak Dump
This is was a pretty good week of singles in my opinion.

Weak Dump – Don’t really like it. Might like parts of it but not the whole composition. Could grow on you. Underwhelming

Simple rules:
As I do every week, I'll giving you the Top-9 new singles officially sent to Urban-format radio stations, that are either beginning to chart right now or expected to chart soon. In exchange, you can have & listen to them, and personally comment below, stating if you would *Bump It* or *Dump It* for each record and why... [Strong Bump, Weak Bump, Weak Dump, or Strong Dump]
-----------------------------

"4:44" (JayZ),
Currently #28 on Rhythmic/Club formats;
+ #30 on Urban formats;
via RocNation [1055 + 1085 Daily US Spins]. – It’ll get plenty radio spins just because it’s Jay-Z and contains gossip. Not sure it works in the club or at a party, it’s not very mixable. Not really a fan of the production. The flow and delivery are not really creative, it's more like just talking over the beat, but not very poetic. The lyrics are off beat and out of the pocket. It’s a way below the standard we’ve come to expect from Jay-Z. Weak Dump

"SORRY NOT SORRY" (Demi Lovato),
Currently #43 on Pop formats;
via Island/Republic [890 Daily US Spins]. – Definitely has a head knod factor. Will probably be all over the radio. Has a nice build up, a full sound, and thump. It Transitions perfectly to the club or party scene. It's catchy, fun and has sing-along qualities. I expect a remix. Strong Bump

"GO FOR BROKE" (Machine Gun Kelly f/ James Arthur),
Currently #45 on Pop formats;
+ shipped to Urban formats on 7/15/17;
via Bad Boy/Interscope [815 Daily US Spins]. – Not sure it’ll work on Urban Radio. It has what sounds like rock and some country elements to it. May work in a club that plays like top 40 or an open format, but this is not what most want to hear in the club. It sounds like an album cut honestly. Weak Dump

"NO EFFORT" (Tee Grizzley),
Currently #37 on Urban formats;
via Quality Control/300/Atlantic [761 Daily US Spins]. – The Production is good. The flow suffers because he keeps breaking the flow by trying to fit too many words or the wrong word s into the bar. The lyricism could be better, It may get some play in the club, I feel it may be a little too much for the radio depending on what the edited version sounds like. The Hook is weak, needs more effort. Production way outshines the lyrics. Weak Dump

"GLOW" (Drake f/ Kanye West),
Currently #40 on Urban formats;
via OVO/Cash Money/Universal [742 Daily US Spins]. – It's way too much going on, it’s overproduced. A terrible use of a classic Earth Wind Fire sample. It doesn’t feel cohesive. Probably will get spins just because of its Drake and Kanye, may get club spins for the same reason. It’s simple enough to sing along too. Severely underwhelming experience. Weak dump

"NO COMPLAINTS" (Metro Boomin' f/ Drake & Offset),
Currently #47 on Urban formats;
via Freebanz/Republic [498 Daily US Spins]. – Lame Hook. Should work for the radio, the club, and the strip club. The Drake verse makes it listenable. The Production outshines the lyrics Weak Bump

"BODAK YELLOW" (Cardi B),
Currently #50 on Urban formats;
via KSR/Atlantic [442 Daily US Spins]. – Sounds like every other trap/mumble rap song, it has nothing that sets it apart from anything else that’s out, that also makes it very mixable. Should get club and strip club spins and possibly some radio spins. The lack of a distinctive sound might take away from the radio spins. Strong Dump

"SET ME FREE" (Mary J Blige),
Currently #34 on Adult Contemp. formats;
via Matriarch/Capitol [139 Daily US Spins]. – It’s classic Mary sing through her pain and frustration, but the production is all wrong for the lyrics. I expect radio spins but not during prime time slots. Weak Bump

"TEMPTATION" (Joey Badass),
Shipped to Urban formats on 6/21/17;
via Pro Era/Cinematic Music/Sony

[beginning w/ 46 Daily US Spins]. – Sadly it maybe too progressive and political for radio. But the beat is perfect for Summer. It has head nod factor. May get some radio play. Will work well at BBQ and the fullness of the sound makes it a candidate to blare out of some speakers. Strong Bump

Bump Or Dump

Alright Here are this week's new singles being shipped to radio. These are potential singles that will be taking over your radio station in the upcoming weeks and my opinion of each. You can find a link for this playlist located at the bottom. Enjoy .

"GLORIOUS" (Macklemore f/ Skylar Grey),
Currently #36 on Pop formats;
+ #43 on Rhythmic/Club formats + #57 on Urban formats;
via Macklemore LLC [1323 + 454 + 302 Daily US Spins]. –  Has a nice full sound. It’s full good music, it’s positive. This might be out of season, however. I don’t see it as a summer hit, it probably has a better shot on pop radio stations than urban radio. Decent lyrics, flow, and delivery and has a little head nod factor. I expect it to hear it used in a movie or tv show.  I like it Weak Bump

"RAKE IT UP" (Yo Gotti f/ Nicki Minaj),
Currently #21 on Urban formats;
via CMG/RocNation/Epic [1551 Daily US Spins]. – This is almost too perfect for radio. Should play well in both the dance club and the strip club. It’s simple all the way around, easy to understand, doesn’t require thought or to listen hard, has a simple hook and a few parts for people to remember and yell out when they come up; the masses will eat it up. I personally don’t really like, however.  Weak Dump

"TONE IT DOWN" (Gucci Mane f/ Chris Brown),
Currently #36 on Urban formats;
+ Shipped to Rhythmic/Club formats on 6/23/17;
via GUWOP/1017/Atlantic [763 Daily US Spins]. – The Production is strong and is the best part of the song. Gucci’s flow and delivery are strong even though the are not very clear.  It’s a good song for riding and pumping out of the speakers so on that alone it could catch on big. It could be a decent club record based on the strength of the production.  Weak Bump

"DON'T MATTER" (August Alsina),
Currently #39 on Urban formats;
via Def Jam [660 Daily US Spins]. – This is a strong single. It may be too traditionally R&B for the midday mainstream radio these days. Later in the day and at night, however, this works. It’s also pretty good for riding out to. I’d actually play it around a woman without feeling like it might be too vulgar. It should definitely make some mixtapes, it’s incredibly mixable for a R&B mix-tape.  Strong Bump

"PERFECT PINT"
(Mike Will Made It f/ Kendrick Lamar, Gucci Mane, & Rae Sremmurd),
Debuting #47 on Urban formats;
via EarDrummers/Interscope [438 Daily US Spins].  – The beat is honestly nauseating. The entire song has a cloudy feel about it. It may play on the radio, but I don’t see it as a huge smash. It may get some love in the club, early in the night. Overall its way too stripped down, simple and unimaginative. Kendrick Lamar couldn’t even save it as his verse was only so-so. Strong Dump

"SIGNS" (Drake),
Shipped to Urban formats;
+ Rhythmic/Club formats on 6/26/17;
via Young Money/Cash Money/Universal [beginning w/ 149 Daily US Spins]. – People will eat it up because it's Drake and has a familiarity to it. It's honestly very close in pattern to “One Dance”. It's not very interesting or particularly captivating. Radio will probably force it, however Strong Dump, it’s an experience I didn’t have to have.

"DON'T RUSH" (Force M.D.s),
Currently #35 on Adult Contemp. formats;
via Force Music LLC. [119 Daily US Spins]. – It’s well produced, well written and well delivered. It probably won’t get play until the late night love section of radio, it's definitely for mature listeners. I wouldn’t expect it in the club or a party. I don’t think it’s a smash, but a strong album cut. Strong Bump

"PIE" (Future f/ Chris Brown),
Shipped to Urban formats;
+ Rhythmic/Club formats on 6/27/17;
via A1/Freebandz/Epic.  -  I have no clue what they are really saying or talking about. But it’s up tempo and has a full sound and it’s simple enough that people won't care that its random and unfocused. It’s dumb enough to be a hit on radio and in the club. Weak Bump

"WISH YOU WELL" (Amir Obe'),
Shipped to Urban formats on 6/19/17;
via Def Jam. -  The Beat is kind of interesting. The lyrics are very simple and not very creative or deep. But it will be perfect for most radio stations. I don’t expect a major hit that’s inescapable, but it’s capable of getting play in between the summer hits. It may work best in the club. I expect someone will do a freestyle or remix over the track. Weak Bump
